Geothermal Heat Pumps

How Does Geothermal Work?

Geothermal systems utilize ground loops to transfer heat to and from the earth to your home. Water is pumped through the loop to transfer the heat, much like the cooling system in your automobile transfers heat away from your engine. Antifreeze may be added to ensure good flow at lower temperatures.

The unit’s heat pump uses refrigerant to raise the heat from the ground loop to warm the air (or water) up to a level which can be moved into your home using your existing air ducts (or radiant tubing).

By utilizing the heat in the ground, geothermal systems are able to provide high levels of efficiency for heating your home during the winter months. Efficiencies of 400% and greater over conventional heating systems are not uncommon.

The transferred heat can also be used for heating hot water.

And because air-conditioning units utilize heat pump technology, your geothermal system can also serve to cool your house in the summer months. In this mode, the ground loop transfers unwanted heat back down into the ground. This heat can also assist in heating your hot water as an additional efficiency to your system.

Utilizing Four Different Types Of Ground Loop Systems

Click on any system to learn more:

Vertical Closed Loop

With this system one or more vertical “geothermal bores” are drilled several hundred feet to provide adequate transfer of ground heat. The number and size of the wells is determined based on the heat requirements of the home.

Buried Closed Horizontal Loop

This system utilizes one or more trenches several feet deep with horizontal rows of loop to transfer the ground heat. Again loop size requirements are determined based on the residential heat needs.

Open Loop

This system utilizes an open loop, using existing water from the well or other water source.

Pond System

For those with a nearby pond or other body of water, the ground loop can be placed at the bottom of the water. This system requires a water depth of several feet to be an efficient heat source.

Heating and Air Conditioning

Your Home Can Also Be Cooled Without Extensive Duct Work If You Have An Existing Hot Water Boiler System.
